IPSO stands for Independent Press Standards Organisation. The institution is an independent regulator for newspapers and magazines, it is located in the UK. Their job is to monitor the different newspapers and magazines making sure they are held in account for any of their actions, also they protect the individual rights as well as allowing freedom of expression for the press. IPSO was launched during 2014. Some of the newspapers that IPSO regulated are the daily mail newspaper, daily star Sunday, the business Sheffield, The mail on Sunday and many more other newspapers and magazines which are regulated by them.
The IPSO replaced the PCC after the phone hacking scandal which showed us us that the regulators were not doing their jobs and they were not monitoring the actions of the newspapers and magazines. This meant that a new regulator was needed for the newspapers and magazines, that’s where IPSO came in as a new company which will monitor and regulate the newspapers and magazines from now on. They also provide advice for journalists and editors so they are able to than be able to uphold their highest possible standards.
IPSO also has its own editors code of practice which sets out the rules for the magazine and the newspapers which they need to follow. Some of the rules within the editors code of practice is accuracy. IPSO expect their newspapers and magazines to make sure that the information that they are publishing is accurate and non of the information is inaccurate, as well as images and different claims have to be backed by text which is legitimate. The paper should also make it clear at times if they are claiming something to be a fact or a comment as there is a significant difference between the two and it could also have an impact on the reader. The editors are also made to respect the privacy of the people they are reporting about and if they do have some information about the private life of the person, they would need to justify gaining this information. They are also not allowed to photograph individuals without their consent as they are expected to respect their public life.
