Advertising

With the newspaper being free having adverts within the paper is the only way Metro could make profit from their paper. Due to this 40%+ of the content within the newspaper is filled with adverts. This allows the Metro to gain a significant profit, allowing them to release their content on a daily basis, while keeping the company financially stable. The products which are advertised within the newspaper usually relate to the content within the newspaper. There are also adverts for companies such as McDonald and KFC which do not relate to any content within the newspaper. There are also brands such as Waitrose which are within the paper for the middle class and upper middle class audience who are willing to pay the price for the products within Waitrose, also there are adverts for financial companies which relate to the audience who are young and may need some money to get their professional life started. There are also Furniture adverts which are targeted at the younger audience of the newspaper who might be living within a flat or a house looking for furniture for their place of stay.

The copy of metro which we are studying is a special matchzone editions, due to this the newspaper is filled with majority sport and football news which is sponsored by lad-brooks. Due to the Lad-brooks sponsor there is a minimum of 3 Lad-brooks adverts within the newspaper taking up whole 2 pages of the newspaper. There is also a section of the newspaper called the weekend which has articles speaking upon the different events which will happen during the weekend, there are also adverts for the different events and concerts that the audience of the newspaper might be interested in seeing.

For example this is a vodefone advert from the newspaper. It’s a really simple advert which is easy to understand, as soon as the audience see it they know they can get more data for a smaller price than normally. This advert also fits in with the house style as it’s a red advert fitting in with the colors of the metro newspaper. The ad also takes up a large amount of the space on the page, due to this we know that the company paid a large amount of money to fill in such a large amount of newspaper. The font on the advert is also clear to read and quite bald matching all the other text that is used within the newspaper.
